How to Throw a Memorable Memorial Day Party
If you haven’t yet made plans for Memorial Day and you need some inspiration to put together a last minute gathering that is safe, fun, and beautiful - JOWY Productions is here to help. For eight years straight we planned THE most talked about Memorial Day event in Los Angeles and since it’s not happening this year due to Covid-restrictions we’d love to share some of our favorite party tips with you. Keep reading for ideas on how you can throw a fabulous and safe Memorial Day celebration right in your own backyard!
Memorial Day is a time to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, but it’s also the unofficial start of summer. This is the day when Americans all over the country either head to the beach or dust off their patio furniture and BBQs after a long winter slumber. So after we’ve paid our respect to the fallen heroes, what better way to spend this federal holiday than outdoors in the company of loved ones?
Pre-Covid, JOWY Productions planned and designed an annual Memorial Day party at a client’s private residence in Malibu for many years. Every year we would switch up the decor and showcase a new color, which is an easy, yet effective way to achieve a beautiful and festive event design. Although red, white and blue seem to be the go-to color palette on Memorial Day, why not try a monochromatic vibe this year? Below you’ll see some examples from our past events that may inspire your color choices.
When it comes to hosting a successful Memorial Day gathering there is one particular aspect that we believe should always stay the same - yes, we’re talking about the food. Sure, you can switch up the menu a little bit or add non-conventional side dishes, but basically guests request (and expect!) the traditional all-American dishes! We quickly discovered that even for the Hollywood elite, burgers and hot dogs are practically a Memorial Day staple. And of course - donuts and ice cream sundaes with lots of different toppings because honestly, what’s a party without sweets? So our advice is to serve fun, traditional, non-fussy food that guests of all ages can enjoy.
Safety has always been our number one priority and today, as we all know, it’s more important than ever. In addition to abiding by the social distancing protocols we strongly advise hiring a lifeguard for your pool party. Having lifeguards, both at the pool and the beach, is a must at any larger gathering so that parents can relax, talk and fully enjoy themselves without having to worry about keeping an eye on their little ones.
Planning and executing our Memorial Day parties took 2-3 months, but don’t let this scare you off from throwing a successful last minute gathering. Because what it really comes down to is hanging out with your favorite people, enjoying time off and having a good time. So put on some sunscreen, heat up the BBQ, and welcome summer 2021!
